The Harrison County Board of Supervisors is pleased to announce the reopening of the last sections of the Harrison County Sand Beach.
“Thanks to some quick and decisive actions from the board, we will have all 26 miles of Harrison County sand beach open by Thursday,” Harrison County Sand Beach Director Chuck Loftis said. “Tropical Storm Cristobal brought a lot of debris along the shoreline of our sand beach, but we have been reopening sections of the beach as they were cleaned, and we worked hard to get the entire beach reopened in three weeks. ”
On June 9, the Harrison County Board of Supervisors made the tough decision to temporarily close the 26 miles of beach due to the effects of Cristobal, which hit the area on June 7. The board also approved hiring a contractor to clean up the environmental waste left along the shoreline.
The first section of the beach reopened on June 11 — two days after it was closed. The final sections of the beach near Henderson Point will reopen Thursday in time for the Independence Day Weekend.
Harrison County offices will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day.
